My band took a gig playing for a dedicated fan in rural Missouri. It was her birthday party, and her big wish was to have the group perform. She was so persuasive and so incredibly kind, we couldn't resist. We drove the hour to her homestead-era house, and set up our gear.

Another early gig was with an outreach event for a church we attended. They needed a keyboardist for a huge event they were planning, and had even rented out a 700 seat amphitheater. I was excited- I'd never played for that many people before.

One of my first band gigs was with a praise and worship group when I was 14. The leader, James Nahrgang, would generously drive to my house and pick me up for rehearsals, and help me get to the various churches and festivals that we'd play. We all got along pretty well, but I think my homeschooling dorkiness rubbed the electric guitar player the wrong way. We never fought, but we weren't exactly best friends.
