Curation

I own 16 chorus effect plugins on my computer. I didn’t buy 16 chorus plugins intentionally. My guess is that I probably bought groups of effects over the years that had one or two tucked away in the bundle, until we got here.

Ironically, I figured out that I had this many chorus effect plugins while I was thinking about buying another chorus effect.

What I really needed wasn’t a new effect plugin. What I needed was someone to say “these are all the chorus effects out there, and this is what they sound like”.

Or even more helpful, having one plugin company create a product that has all of the more important chorus types available in one plugin. Then their pitch is easy. “Just buy this, and you never have to hunt through plugin lists for the right chorus ever again”.

If you make Art, your job is to be your own Curator to your audience. Responsible curation is what allows us to build a reputation, trust with an audience, and gives us the best shot at being remembered when someone needs what we make. Our pitch should be “If you’re looking for this specific feeling and this specific experience, that’s what you’ll always get with my art”.

And then we need to say it again and again for the rest of our careers.
