Should I Go To College For Music?

I recently had someone ask me about going to college and majoring in music. What did I think? This launched into a lengthy conversation where I monologued about my thoughts on higher education, colleges, and the importance of self-directed learning.

Don’t worry, you won’t have to listen to me ramble. Instead, I’m having two smarter people than I sum up my view.

The first is Seth Godin. He’s a visionary entrepreneur and marketing expert, and I feel has a pulse on the future of business more accurately than most. He wrote a free book about education’s role in the 21st century, and gave an amazing TED talk about it last year. Here’s the video:

STOP STEALING DREAMS: On the future of education & what we can do about it. Seth Godin is the author of 14 books that have been bestsellers around the world and have been translated into more than 35 languages.

The second voice is Harry Miree. Harry is a Berklee grad and very successful session drummer in Nashville. He got to learn from some of the best musicians in the world at Berklee, but what he said on his video blog might surprise you:

The number 1 question I get asked by my drum students: should I go to college for music? I can't answer that, but I can sure enough muse on my own experiences with it for 5 minutes, if that helps you at all. New video every Monday!

If you’re thinking about going to college for music or you know someone that is, please forward this blog post to them. These two voices might make a big difference in helping them get where they want to go.
